VIR Qualifying

The Rolex sports car series on track tomorrow at VIR in around four Tony eleven the number one topic of conversation. Chip Ganassi racing in the six race win streak for drivers Scott Pruitt meanwhile are off Chris Noble has more. We might be in Virginia but it feels like the wild west after six wins in a row there’s a 45000 dollar bounty on the head of the dancing game. Some might think marketing gimmick more than really. Fact of the matter is everybody is talking about it that money makes big difference if you win this weekend with the continental money thrown in I think it’s an 83000 dollar purse yeah. like to claim doesn’t make us. Try any harder work already been trying as hard as we can comes David Stewart and so it does anybody thousands and investing thousands of point five million. We get when we come restaurants. In qualifying Paul Edwards was out early and held the top spot for almost ten minutes memo responded snagging he won by just 500 the second. But one lap later in the last turn on the racetrack Rojas drops the left front and rips the entire corner off the car. That incident caused a red flag so he loses his fast lap drops to sixth on the grade. He gives the whole back to Paul Edwards and spirit of Daytona in Warner right before the start finish guy is slid event. Hit the curve. A little bit d’antoni is somehow does win it got with a pair managed to trip is littered. And we finish a lap plan was scratching their real. No bounds and you don’t prevents them I’m assuming. This for some reason I got my my love and got. Taken out of when my car was still running. When it happened but they throughout our red flag when sometimes people spinning out than they don’t put a red flag song I don’t know. It is a great day first people for me and I still is gonna get in team you know second for us so we’re on the way out. We got to back it up so it result we’ve had a tough time put race and I results again this year but awesome mascara for night. Ball around its best are very potentially a rainy day tomorrow. Paul Edwards and Antonio Garcia were very fast at barber but it. failure took them out of that race he and that team keep the mechanical gremlins at bay and take that 25000 dollar bounty. So it’s Edwards and Garcia starting up front the DP class tomorrow looking for their first win as good as seen guys go six try to make it seven GT side it’s all about Chevrolet. Young Magnuson and rob go get it done their second pole of the year.

a lot of damage has been done to our country

Gabriel Byrne in

the row about the Gathering. Unlike

Byrne, however, the wellknown designer is determined to make the most of the Government’s initiative, even though he thinks it has a touch of hypocrisy about it.

“I can understand where he’s coming from. ‘We love you now because we need you’. There is some hypocrisy there. At the same time though, we need to seize every opportunity. I wouldn’t knock it in the way Gabriel has but I can understand his comments and I can accept the way he’s coming at it.

“There is a hypocrisy but I need those Americans to come in and buy

Paul Costelloe menswear, jewellery and ladies’ wear, so I encourage it,” he says of the Government’s effort to lure our diaspora home in 2013.

Not that Mr Costelloe is looking to simply hawk his wares to our American cousins or anyone else for that matter. He’s fully prepared to put his shoulder to the wheel to build relationships with his customers.

Indeed, these days much of his time is spent shuttling back and forth between his studio in London’s Gloucester Place and

Ireland to meet facetoface with the retailers who sell his designs.

Asked about his latest visit here last week in which he took in both Cork and Galway, Costelloe says: “It really is just talking about the product, getting people to know you and thinking of buying Paul Costelloe jewellery instead of, I don’t know, a”Maybe that’s a wrong example. To promote your own brand, you can’t just wait for a customer to come to you. You have to be out there meeting the people and hoping they like you and the fact that you’re Irish. That doesn’t mean guaranteed Irish. It has to be done very discreetly.”

Costelloe has been in the business a long time now, but his energy clearly hasn’t diminished from his youth and the Saturdays when he turned out to play soccer in Dublin’s Herbert Park on a team which counted a plethora of

Ireland’s then nascent movers and shakers including developers

Johnny Ronan and Paddy McKillen amongst its number.

Asked to recall those times, he says: “It was a nice buzz. We were of a generation that knew no bounds. We hadn’t been sheltered by our parents. We weren’t being collected from the local dancehall or Wesley. We had to find our own way home.”

Speaking of the independence engendered in him by his parents from an early age, he adds: “We weren’t mollycoddled. Once you reached 17 or 18, it was a case of goodbye and good luck. I was living on a pauper’s income in Paris. I used to live on a can of beans on a camping stove in a room on the Left Bank in Paris.

“It prepares you for any ups and the downs. We weren’t given pocket money; we had to make our own. Nothing was made easy for us. Our parents worked really hard and they expected us to manage. I think we’ve sheltered this generation to quite an extent.”

Asked for his views on the direction Ireland needs to take now to be successful on the world stage again, Costelloe says: “Ireland is a terrible beauty. It’s a beautiful country with beautiful people but quite a bit of damage has been done.

“We need to get back our respect within Europe and within the world. We need to be competitive. Being competitive isn’t looking at your nextdoor neighbour, it’s looking across Europe and to Asia. How are they doing? How many hours a week are they working? And if someone does a bad job, we need to be ruthless. I’m Irish, but I have to admire the English for the way they take on responsibility and the way the buck stops. It’s to their credit.”

Asked what differences he notices these days between London and Dublin, he says: “It’s a very narrow bit of sea, but it’s very wide at the moment in terms of the direction London is going. Compared to Dublin, it’s just not comparable anymore. London is moving so fast, so quickly.

“I think we even have to review Dublin as a city. Who’s running it? Do we need a mayor with more power like a

Boris Johnson who’s been really effective? People mightn’t like him but he has that charismatic style that young people are really drawn to. He’s disrespectful in a very smart way. He’s effective and he gets out there. I see our leaders playing it safe and we’re sheltered from reality sometimes.”

Returning to his own specific area of expertise, he says we can learn a lot from London when it comes to selling our wares to customers both here and abroad.

On this, he says: “In London, everything’s very professional, the experience of shopping and of buying a product. It’s the presentation, the packaging and the aura when people walk into a store. That’s where we can learn. We have to change the way we do our business. You go into a shop. How are you sold that product whether its 25 or 200? We really have to look at how we treat our customers.”

Police arrest alleged driver in poker champ robbery

The alleged getaway driver in the home invasion and robbery of poker champion Jonathan Duhamel last December has been arrested in Gatineau.

Gatineau police arrested a 21yearold man near his home yesterday after a warrant was issued for his arrest by police in Boucherville, the Montrealarea suburb where Duhamel lived.

He is the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the bizarre case, which left Duhamel beaten and robbed of $115,000 cash and jewelry worth $50,000.

Bianca RojasLatraverse, Duhamel’s exgirlfriend, was among those arrested and charged with armed robbery, breaking and entering, forcible confinement, assault and conspiracy.

Earlier this week, RojasLatraverse’s lawyer said her client intends to plead guilty to some of the charges.

JohnStephen ClarkLemay, 22, and Anthony Bourque, 20, were also charged in connection with the robbery and assault.

Another person, Andr RobertPerron, 27, was charged with possessing stolen property. Police alleged he was found with the poker champion’s stolen Rolex watch.

Const. Mark David of the Longueuil police wouldn’t say if a deal reached with any of the accused led to the identification of the latest suspect in the case.

“With our investigative techniques, we found out who that [other] person was,” he said.

“The minute we had enough evidence, we received a warrant and the Gatineau police assisted us in this case.”

Beaten and robbed

Duhamel won a world title in 2010 in Las Vegas, earning $8.9 million US.

The poker star told police he was sleeping on Dec. 21, 2011, when a man rang his doorbell at his Boucherville, Que., claiming to have a package to deliver.

trap builder McFeely plays the victim

Not that I’m taking it personally. Tom McFeely was already looking pretty cheesed off before we met, having just been told in no uncertain terms by Mr Justice Nicholas Kearns that he has exactly five weeks to sort out the almighty mess at Priory Hall.

As the development’s displaced residents gave their reaction to the media outside the court building, the former hunger striker was inside, protesting in colourful terms to his legal team about the demands being made of him.

An awkward attempt by a freshfaced barrister to handdeliver a letter to McFeely in the middle of his selfpitying rant did nothing to improve his mood, judging by the manner in which he flung the envelope on the floor as soon as it was placed into his chubby hand.

It probably wasn’t the best moment to call Tom on his mobile either. But somebody working for him did just that.

“Have you got the statement of affairs yet?” he inquired loudly and impatiently. The caller must have answered in the affirmative, given Tom’s irritated retort.

“They don’t miss a trick, do they?” he barked, rocking on his heels, while his redfaced barrister and solicitor chatted to each other and looked the other way.

Because when you think about it, you really wouldn’t want to miss a trick when it comes to dealing with Tom McFeely, the hardline republican who first made a name for himself through dispensing terror and later made a fortune from building ramshackle apartments.

Miss a trick with Tom and you could find yourself living in a hotel room while you continue to pay down the 250,000 mortgage you took out at the height of the boom to buy one of McFeely’s firetrap apartments.

Not that the convicted terrorist and developer showed any sign last Friday morning that he understood the misery he has brought to the lives of the 300 people who had called Priory Hall home up until their evacuation last week.

Leaning against the wall at the back of the courtroom, McFeely, in between checking the time on his

Rolex, fixed his stare at a point on the wall above Mr Justice Kearns head and showed no sign of being moved by the proceedings.

Tom is well used to the court system, from his time in the Provisional IRA and from his “career” as a developer.

“You are an extremely dangerous, intelligent and vicious young man,” a judge in

Belfast told him in 1976.

McFeely went on hunger strike for 53 days in the Maze Prison in 1980 while serving a 26year sentence for the attempted murder of a

Northern Ireland policeman in a gun battle, possession of illegal weapons and a post office robbery.

He didn’t look hungry last Friday, with his belly spilling over the belt of his pinstripe pants. Hardly surprising, given how he has had his snout in the developers’ trough since coming across the Border in 1989 with just 240 in his pocket to become a builder.

And while he has tried to distance himself from other developers, describing them in one newspaper interview as “anaemic”, that didn’t stop him from collecting the baubles that one associates with them, such as the house on Ailesbury Road, Dublin 4, a Bentley limousine and a 6m villa in Portugal.

Now the empire he built would appear, like Priory Hall, to be falling apart and Tom McFeely believes he is being hard done by.

He probably thinks he has suffered enough already, given the number of judgements registered by the ACC Bank against the properties he and business partner Larry O’Mahony amassed between them during the boom. Not even Tom’s palatial home on Ailesbury Road or Larry’s pile on Shrewsbury Road have been spared by the Dutchowned bank, according to the filings held at the Registry of Deeds.

Unlike the residents of Priory Hall, however, both men continue to enjoy the use of their D4 homes whenever they are in the capital, according to residents on both roads.

And while Tom claimed last week that he spent most of his time on a plane these days, Larry O’Mahony is (according to the address on the record of his bankruptcy in the UK) now ensconced in a luxurious apartment in Central Place in the picturesque and highly affluent Manchester suburb of Wilmslow.

Looking at the description of Mr O’Mahony’s present home on the Central Place website, it puts the plight of the unfortunate residents of Priory Hall into even harsher perspective.

“Central Place is for people who are looking for exclusivity,” it says.

Meanwhile and as a result of the reckless actions of Messrs McFeely and O’Mahony, 300 ordinary people whom they mercilessly ripped off in Priory Hall are simply looking for a home.

ABC News Australian Broadcasting Corporation

Money can’t buy love or happiness and in the case of Bernard Madoff, Wall Street’s biggest swindler, it couldn’t buy good taste either.

That’s the opinion of some experts who saw the Madoff jewellery, furs and other illgotten extravagances that US Marshals will auction to benefit victims of his Ponzi scheme.

“I can’t imagine wearing any of this. “The items look good with a superficial surface appeal. I think that sums up Mr Madoff.”

Designer watches and diamond earrings acquired in a decadeslong fraud of as much as $US65 billion will be sold alongside the imprisoned Madoff’s Hofstra school ring, fishing tackle and New York Mets baseball jacket emblazoned with his infamous name.

Among the highlights is Madoff’s ironically named Rolex Prisoner Watch. The watches were made for prisoners of war in World War II Germany and this particular one has an estimated price range of $US75,000 to $US87,500.

Kevin Zavian, an appraiser with the Antiques Roadshow television show said it appeared to be authentic, based on a cursory examination through the glass case, and might be listed for $US100,000 to $US150,000 in a different auction setting.

However, this appears to be one of the few exceptional pieces amassed by a collector who bilked investors for decades. Madoff was sentenced to 150 years in prison on June 29.

“There is a lot of stuff here that is just run of the mill,” said Mr Zavian, who is a master jeweller.

Sitting ducksA collection of luxury yachts and other vessels seized from Madoff and a top aide, Frank DiPascali, will be sold at an auction on November 17 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Also, there is more Madoff loot that will come up in other subsequent sales, said Jennifer Crane of the US Marshals Service’s Asset Forfeiture Division.

Still, there are a lot of people want a piece of Madoff and now they’ll have their chance to buy anything from Ruth Madoff’s diamond earrings to Bernie’s duck decoys.

Bidding on the duck decoys starts at $US53.

“We had a lot of interest in the duck decoys,” said Ms Crane.

Any buyers worried about bad karma might assuage their guilt with the knowledge that the proceeds are going to a Department of Justice fund to compensate Madoff’s victims.

Lebanon rocket provokes Israeli barrage

A Katyushatype rocket fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel on Tuesday night without causing any casualties, prompting Israel to retaliate with a salvo of missiles.

The rocket fired from Lebanon hit open ground east of the Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona and started a fire, which did not cause any serious damage, they said.

Witnesses in Kiryat Shmona said Israeli artillery retaliated by firing on targets in southern Lebanon. Asked to comment, an Israeli military source would neither confirm nor deny that.

Following the incident, a security source in Lebanon said eight rockets fired from Israeli hit near the border village of Hula. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

UN peacekeeping troops and the Lebanese army cut off the road leading to Hula and were searching the area, an AFP correspondent said.

Residents of Hula said they heard a rocket fired from the brush outside the village shortly before the rockets hit the area.

It was the fourth rocket attack this year from Lebanon towards Israel and comes as crossborder tensions have been increasing.

On September 11, at least two rockets fired from the southern village of alQlaileh slammed into Israel without causing casualties but triggering retaliatory artillery fire.

A group linked to alQaeda claimed responsibility, according to US monitoring group SITE Intelligence.

In February, Israeli artillery bombarded alQlaileh in response to a rocket attack. There were no casualties in Lebanon, while a few Israelis were lightly wounded.

In January, during Israel’s assault on the Gaza Strip, four rockets fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel, wounding two women.

Shi’ite movement Hezbollah, which fought a devastating 34day war with Israel in 2006, has its stronghold in south Lebanon, where a rocket exploded on October 12 in the home of activist Abdel Nasser Issa in Tayr Felsay village.

The Israeli army released film it said showed rockets being removed from Issa’s home following the explosion, but Hezbollah said the pictures were of metal shutters at the location where explosion happened.

The Israeli army said the blast “proves again the presence of weapons forbidden in southern Lebanon” under UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 2006 war.

Hezbollah ‘creating a powderkeg’

The 34day war killed more than 1,200 Lebanese, mostly civilians, and more than 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers.

Resolution 1701 called for the removal of weapons in southern Lebanon from the hands of everyone except the Lebanese army and other state security forces.

Israel has repeatedly accused Hezbollah of rearming, and an Israeli army spokesman claimed on Tuesday night the group had “dozens of arms caches containing hundreds of rockets”.

Following the October 12 incident, Israeli President Shimon Peres accused Hezbollah of having turned Lebanon into a powderkeg.

“It’s not Israel that is endangering Lebanon, but rather Hezbollah, just as Hamas is endangering the Palestinians.

“There is no reason for Israel not to make peace with Lebanon,” he said, adding that Israel’s northern neighbour “could be, with the help of this peace, the Switzerland of the Middle East. But it’s clear to everyone who is preventing this.”

how to save my relationship

Ever since my boyfriend started going to university he’s changed a lot. He doesn’t pay as much attention to me, he talks to a lot of girls now, he’s never romantic or sweet and I just want to save the relationship. But I’ve been so unhappy lately, and I’m not sure how to do it. I’ve tried talking to him about it and he uses excuses like “he’s too busy” or he doesn’t focus on texting. I think its just an excuse because if he still cared about me like he used to, it wouldn’t be something he’d have to think about when talking to me. Please help me save my relationship!

I’m sorry this is happening. But this frequently does happen when one goes to college. They start meeting new people, and experiencing new things. Longdistance relationships start taking a beating and not much time is spent on them anymore.

I know you want to save it, but it might be better if you just started having some fun of your own. Don’t tie yourself down obviously he seems to be having a good time, so don’t sit and wait while he’s enjoying himself. Get out among friends and enjoy yourself! If it’s meant to be, it will be.
